AT&T is announcing plans to introduce their “Gigapower” U-Verse service to more areas. The first city in California to receive full duplex gigabit broadband?

Yes Apple’s home town will be getting data speeds 10 times faster than the beefiest cable offerings around these parts. Specific locations and dates will be announced soon, and San Jose, CA is also in consideration for a future fiber roll out.

AT&T Confirms Plans to Deliver U-verse® with AT&T GigaPower® in Cupertino

Cupertino, Calif., Aug. 20, 2014 — AT&T* today confirmed it will expand its ultra-fast AT&T GigaPower network to the City of Cupertino. The all-fiber network will bring symmetrical upload and download broadband speeds up to 1 gigabit per second, and AT&T’s most advanced TV services to consumers and small businesses.

AT&T is deploying additional fiber and electronics to the existing network in Cupertino to meet the growing demand for ultra-fast broadband.  The network enhancements will enable customers to have access to AT&T’s fastest Internet speeds available to consumers.**

Local residents and small businesses on the AT&T GigaPower network will also experience cutting-edge TV services with the ability to watch and record five simultaneous HD streams, and its largest capacity DVR with one terabyte of storage.

Specific locations of availability and pricing for the Cupertino market will be announced at a later date.

On April 21, 2014, AT&T announced a major initiative to expand its ultra-fast fiber-based AT&T GigaPower network to up to 100 candidate cities and municipalities across the nation. As part of that announcement, AT&T said it is also considering other San Jose areas – Campbell, Mountain View and San Jose as candidate municipalities for the service.

U-verse with AT&T GigaPower has launched to tens of thousands of customer locations across the Austin, Dallas and Fort Worth markets.  The AT&T GigaPower network will also be delivered to Charlotte, Greensboro, Houston, Jacksonville, Fla., Miami, Nashville, Overland Park, Kan., Raleigh-Durham, San Antonio, and Winston-Salem.

Additionally, AT&T has committed that upon approval of its proposed acquisition of DIRECTV, the company will expand the AT&T GigaPower network to an additional 2 million customer locations. All of these 2 million locations are over and above what the company announced in April.

Other AT&T initiatives in 2014 include:

  • Enhance and expand its 4G LTE wireless network, the nation’s most reliable 4G LTE network.**** AT&T 4G LTE wireless service is available in 28 major cities across California.
  • Expand its U-verse footprint to more areas of California. U-verse is currently available in the Bakersfield, Fresno, Los Angeles, Modesto, Sacramento, San Diego, San Francisco, San Jose areas and surrounding communities.

AT&T invested more than $7.1 billion in its California wireless and wireline networks from 2011 through 2013.
