AT&T to Launch Gigabit Internet Service in Los Angeles

GigaPowerCompetition folks. I want more competition. AT&T is pushing forward with their GigaPower fiber internet roll out, and it looks like a major ISP finally has their sights on the Los Angeles Metro area.

“Fast, affordable Internet is essential for today’s cities,” said Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti. “Having high-speed digital communications infrastructure is as important as ensuring that we can efficiently deliver electricity, transportation, clean water, and lighted streets to Angelenos. The ultra-fast AT&T Gigapower service will help L.A.’s students, entrepreneurs, and families succeed and help our city’s economy grow.”

Starting with West Palm Beach, Big Blue will be expanding their gigabit footprint over 2016 for businesses and residential areas. This expansion follows their merger with DirectTV which U-Verse customer can subscribe to for multimedia content.

It’s exciting news for those of us in Southern California. Hopefully soon we’ll have more competition for faster broadband services. You can read the full press release below.

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 7, 2015 – AT&T1 announced today it is planning to expand the availability of ultra-fast speeds through  AT&T GigaPowerSM to homes, apartments and small businesses in parts of 38 additional metros across the United States, which will total at least 56 metros served, including in the Los Angeles area.2

We’re bringing our fastest Internet to customers in the Los Angeles area as quickly as possible, making AT&T GigaPower available today to multiple apartment complexes – Eighth and Grand and Hanover Grand Avenue – with a launch of service in parts of the larger Los Angeles metro in 2016.

With the launch of service in the West Palm Beach area as well today, AT&T GigaPower is now available in 20 of the nation’s largest metro areas.

Internet speeds up to 1 gigabit per second over the AT&T GigaPower network let you instantly access the latest online movies, music, games and more.3 AT&T GigaPower can also improve your experience when connecting to the cloud and videoconferencing, and gives you the speed to power all of your devices.

“Bringing AT&T GigaPower to the greater LA area is big for residents and businesses throughout the region, and is yet another example of the continued investment and innovation AT&T brings to our customers in California,” said Ken McNeely, President of AT&T California. “Demand for high speed data grows with each new app and web-based service, and AT&T is delivering to meet that demand.”

Nearly 2 years ago, we successfully launched the first AT&T GigaPower metro in Austin, Texas. This launch led to a major expansion in multiple metros beginning in 2014. We recently marked a major milestone deploying the AT&T GigaPower network to more than 1 million locations, and we expect to more than double availability by the end of 2016.

We’ll continue to roll out our fastest Internet services over a 100% fiber network to reach more than 14 million residential and commercial locations.

Frost & Sullivan recently recognized AT&T for its leadership in high-speed Internet services. It awarded AT&T the 2015 North American Competitive Strategy and Innovation Leadership of the Year Award for Broadband. The analyst firm praised AT&T for its “aggressive pursuit of higher bandwidth access” for customers through its AT&T GigaPower network initiative.

AT&T has invested nearly $7.4 billion in its wireless and wired networks in California between 2012 through 2014, driving a wide range of upgrades to reliability, coverage, speed and performance for residents and business customers.

Our AT&T Business Fiber Internet service is already available to small businesses in parts of more than 180 U.S. cities, including in Los Angeles, making it possible to download and upload at speeds up to 300 megabits per second,6 with plans to reach up to 1 gigabit per second.  It supports business applications, such as video conferencing, working in the cloud and disaster recovery.
