Coolpad Illumina Review: Android at $40?

It’s been a while since I took a look at a TRULY entry level handset. Coolpad sells a phone for $40, and that’s about as cheap as you can go in the USA. Has tech improved enough to push costs this low? How much phone can you REALLY get for two Jacksons?

CES 2019 ReCap: Vlogging for a Week on the LG V40

Second year in a row producing videos at CES all from my phone! The main goal over last year was to streamline my setup. What worked? What still had issues? Can you really depend on JUST a phone to get work done? Here’s my recap from this year’s CES!

Audeze Mobius Wireless Gaming Headphones – The Evolution of Audio

Working with Newegg to shoot something a little different.

I spent some time breaking in the Audeze Mobius Wireless Gaming Headset, and we decided on a more casual conversation, instead of a punchy review. I like companies that show a grown up philosophy on accessories and peripherals. It’s all too easy to crank out disposable junk, and slap a “GAMERZ” label on the box. Audeze approached this market with a little nuance, so our video needed a little nuance. Enjoy!

#SGGQA 075: What I Saw at CES 2019, Apple Sales Woes, AT&T Cutting 7000 Jobs

Apple sales woes continue to put pressure on the company. Will iPhone prices get slashed sooner than expected? Carriers have promised to stop selling subscriber data, but it’s still really easy to pay for a specific phone’s location. After lobbying against Net Neutrality and FOR the Trump tax cut, AT&T is laying off thousands of employees.

And in happier news, CES was last week! Let’s talk about what I saw on the show floor with Newegg!

Get your tech week started off right!

Bluetooth Audio Quality Showdown! LDAC vs APTX HD vs AAC vs SBC!

I’ve seen a ton of debates and showdowns on different wireless audio solutions. Comparing AAC, APTX, and LDAC is kind of useless if all you can share is anecdotal listening experiences. Doubly so if people are listening on different headphones for their comparisons.

We need something we can measure! Sony and Qualcomm make some pretty steep claims about audio quality. More than just listening, let’s actual analyze some data!

Terrible Mobile Games? App Stores Are to Blame!

We saw several manufacturers push gaming phones last year, but the industry as a whole is still struggling to reach mainstream mindshare. A common (accurate) criticism, mobile games still kinda suck.

But why?

The hardware we carry in our pockets is more than capable. I think we need to follow the money…

Should California Tax Businesses for Employee Commutes to Pay for Infrastructure?

We have a lot of roads in California, and we have a LOT of people driving on those roads. We still need to pay for repairing and improving roads, but we’d certainly benefit from fewer drivers during rush hour. Gas and mileage taxes are incredibly unpopular, so how might we raise funds for infrastructure AND change corporate behavior around ideas like telecommuting? Well, we liberals sure do love our taxes…

Fiio BTR1K Bluetooth Headphone Amp: The cure for a missing headphone jack?

Dark days for mobile audio fans.

More devices are walking away from the universal phono jack. Many phones keeping the jack deliver disappointing quality. There’s a reluctance to return to standalone media players. For the individual who owns nice headphones, what should they do?

Fiio might just have a solution with the BTR1K. Can we really combine the idea of a Bluetooth headphone adapter with a high quality DAC/AMP? Let’s take a listen!
