Comparing Meta Quest to Apple Vision Pro: Zuckerberg Did It Right…

Yeah I get it. Zuckerberg promoting Quest, and saying it’s better than Apple’s Mixed Reality headset, was more than a bit self-serving.

What’s sad though, it’s refreshing to see a CEO step up and make a case for their company’s product directly. I think many of us in the tech scene have forgotten that occasionally leaders need to lead. Continue reading “Comparing Meta Quest to Apple Vision Pro: Zuckerberg Did It Right…”

#SGGQA 320: Apple, Tech Journalism, and a Decade of Out of Control Hype…

HAPPY MONDAY!

I’m wrapping up some travel, and unfortunately can’t livestream today. I DID finish this video essay though, and it seemed a fitting addition to the topics we cover on this weekly show.

Tech journalists have been promising an Apple AR revolution for over a decade now, but very little commentary has come from Apple directly. This has had an enormous chilling effect on AR and VR markets.

Rumors. Leaks. FUD.

After a decade of reporting on a future mythical “Apple Glasses” product, what do we actually have?

Let’s get our tech week started right!

Dear Google and Samsung: Copying Apple Vision Pro is a DUMB Move…

Dear Samsung and Google,

This is a bad idea.

Trying to make a copycat Mixed Reality headset to compete against the Vision Pro is a bad idea.

Augmented reality could be so much more, but we need to cover the basics first.

Be the Anti-Apple.

Love,
Juan

We ALL Suffer When Apple Products DON’T “Just Work”

Apple needs to be held to the standard they advertise for themselves. When they slip, they should be criticized harder than any other consumer tech brand operating today. When they make mistakes, they deliver those mistakes at a scale no other brand can approach.

The potential for consumer harm from an Apple mistake is an order of magnitude higher than any other competitor, and Apple has a clear track record of trying to break standards to sell proprietary solutions for their own benefit.

Case in point: AirTags.

AirTags are a really cool idea. Continue reading “We ALL Suffer When Apple Products DON’T “Just Work””

Apple Vision Pro: Years of Hype for an Expensive Dev Kit…

Apple Vision Pro reaction.

I’m disappointed. There are FEW products which have been hyped as hard (for as long) as Apple’s VR/AR headset. What Apple revealed at WWDC was underwhelming…

Let’s chat… Continue reading “Apple Vision Pro: Years of Hype for an Expensive Dev Kit…”

When iPhone Parents Bully Android Parents…

This post was originally published in my Production Diary on Patreon.com/SomeGadgetGuy. Many thanks to the Patrons supporting production on this blog!

It’s finally happened. My wife has been bullied by an iPhone owner. One of Lex’s best friend’s Mom attacked her over text messages. Our community will be torn apart.

DOGS AND CATS LIVING TOGETHER! MASS HYSTERIA!

Naw. It wasn’t that dramatic. Marie and I are having a nice little chuckle. We’re still going to let Lex play with their son. It’s all good.

It’s an interesting situation, and a complicated social dynamic. It showcases perfectly how Apple marketing “encourages” iPhone owners to act like missionaries. Continue reading “When iPhone Parents Bully Android Parents…”

120Hz iPhone ProMotion AND Better Battery! Praising Apple for the bare minimum…

Here’s the deal. I WANT people to like the gadgets they buy. I think it’s the saddest feeling in the world to put time and money towards a gadget which later turns out to be a poor fit for your needs. That’s why I think it’s so critical that reviewers get the details right, and why we need more nuance in tech conversations.

That said, we still need to balance our commentary and reviewing against the largest corporations, with the biggest marketing budgets, making the boldest claims.

My criticisms of a TRILLION dollar corporation have little to do with the people who enjoy that company’s products. If I criticize Apple, I’m criticizing APPLE. My frustrations with Apple run high because Apple business moves effect Apple consumers.

YOU are not Apple (unless somehow Tim Cook found his way to reading this, then Hello Mr. Cook!)

Now, that said, it is nice Apple finally figured out that we want larger batteries in our phones. Continue reading “120Hz iPhone ProMotion AND Better Battery! Praising Apple for the bare minimum…”

iPhone 13: I’m not buying one.

I’m not going to buy the iPhone 13.

I won’t be reviewing the iPhone 13.

If you’re curious why, let’s chat.
