Lenovo Expands Yoga Tablet line with 13″ Windows Slate

Convertible Tablet_Yoga Tablet 2 Pro_13_W_Hero_01From smartphones to tablets, the motto this year in mobility? “Bigger is Better”, and now Lenovo is jumping in with a new Windows PC to expand their Yoga Tablet 2 family of products.

The 13″ Yoga features a QHD touchscreen (2560×1440) powered by an Intel Atom Quad-Core processor and 4GB of RAM. The slate features 64GB of storage which can be expanded another 64GB via MicroSD. Happily you’ll also get a Bluetooth keyboard in the box.

That extra screen real estate means you have a bit more room to include some other fun features like stereo speakers, a Micro-HDMI port, and a honking big battery. The cell in the 13″ Yoga is 12,800 mAh, which Lenovo claims is good for 15 hours of run time.

The new Yoga with Windows will hit the streets in early November and is expected to retail for $699.99. More pics below.

Microsoft Shows Off New Surface Pro 3 Laptop/Tablet Hybrid PC

51Surface Pro 3 NYC EventAt a press event in New York City today, CEO Satya Nadella discussed the company’s hardware strategy, emphasizing that Microsoft was not competing with their manufacturing partners, but using their hardware experiments to push the boundaries of their software and hardware integration.

34Surface Pro 3 NYC EventHead of the Surface Team, Panos Panay took the stage with a couple quips regarding Microsoft’s press coverage in the past. Discussing the market, where 96% of tablet owners still own a laptop, Panay took the wraps off the Surface Pro 3. Featuring an even thinner design, 9.1mm almost 2 milimeters thinner than the Surface Pro 2, it’s the slimmest Core i7 product available. Microsoft estimates a 10% performance boost over the Pro 2.

2Surface Pro 3 NYC EventThe screen size has increased to a 12 inch diagonal with a new 3:2 aspect ratio and a proper 2K resolution of 2160×1440. All of this improvement without increasing weight, and Surface Pro 3 will come in at 800 grams. Yet we’ll likely see about a 10-20% improvement in battery life.  Continue reading “Microsoft Shows Off New Surface Pro 3 Laptop/Tablet Hybrid PC”

European Commission pushes for universal laptop charger to reduce e-waste

laptop chargerHow great would this be.

The International Electrotechnical Commission was the same body behind adopting a universal cell phone charger standard after deciding on Micro USB for all mobile devices (koffCawfAppleCOFF), and now they have their sights set on our laptop chargers. It’s the bane of the mobile warrior’s existence. Knowing that it’s pretty unlikely that anyone around you will have the same kind of laptop charger as you. It sparks my liberal guilt as those kinds of accessories can’t travel with you when you buy new hardware, so it’s very likely they’ll end up in a landfill.

The IEC estimates that adopting a universal charger would eliminate approximately half a million tons of e-waste per year. Yikes.

We have three laptops in house right now, and none use the same charger, so the cost and convenience of a standard would be terrific.

Acer refreshes $299 C720p Chromebook, adds Touchscreen, doesn’t raise price!

Acer C720P_touch_handThe mobile computing landscape is getting ridiculously competitive. Chromebooks, Netbooks, Tablets, proper latptops, and hybrids. The bang for buck ratio is disrupting-ly low. An incredible number of options for a variety of usage scenarios.

Acer is sweetening their Chromebook offering. The c720p is a refresh of their C720. The hardware is almost exactly the same, even down to the somewhat mediocre TFT LCD panel used on the screen. What’s nice however is they’re adding a touch panel to that screen. What’s even nicer is that touch panel isn’t going to increase the price. The C720p will retail for the same $299 that the original did.

Not too shabby.

ChromeOS doesn’t particularly need touch, but playing with it on my Windows 8 laptop, I think we’re just entering an era where adding touchscreens will be the norm. We’re all sort of learning to just interact directly with things on our screen. When I’m really tired, I have to remember that my desktop does not have a touchscreen… You’ll still see finger prints on my monitors though…

Sporting an 11.6″ screen, an Intel Celeron processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of flash storage it looks like it could be a decent seller this holiday season. Expect to see lappys shipping mid December.

Lenovo Announces Most Affordable Windows 8.1 Tablet – 8″ Miix 2 starting at $299

Lenovo-Miix-2-Windows-8.1-8-inch-tabletIt’s official. Windows Netbook-y machines are dead. Long live Tablets and Hybrids!

It looks like people are starting to get Windows 8, and no company has showcased the benefits of Microsoft’s newest operating system than Lenovo. Even during the worst of the PC sales slump, Lenovo was floating almost zero loss in sales. Any change as drastic as this you would expect consumers to react negatively (just ask Apple about their painful transition to OSX), but Lenovo floated steady. Buoyed by a line up of flex-y and twisty computers which wonderfully showed off Windows 8’s strengths.

Now with Windows 8.1 on the horizon, Microsoft’s strategy is incredibly clear. They aren’t trying to walk into the traditional Tablet market. They aren’t trying to “save” the PC market. They’re trying to redefine both and combine those markets. Why have a slate for fun little apps and a laptop for work when you could have both?

Lenovo’s playing into this round with one of the most affordable tablets to hit Microsoft’s ecosystem. The Miix 2 is an 8″ slate powered by an Intel “Baytrail” quad-core Atom processor and 2GB of RAM. Miix2 will feature front and rear cameras, and like previous 8″ Windows tablets it includes the Home & Student edition of Office. Prices start at $299 for a 32GB model, and there are also some great accessories announced alongside. Users can pick up an optional keyboard cover and stylus to further improve their productivity.

So there you have it folks. High-end netbook guts in an almost pocket-able mini slate which runs a proper version of Windows and arrives at a price point which competes against consumer Android mini tablets. It even undercuts the iPad Mini by $50 while offering up twice as much storage. It’s a pretty solid play by Lenovo, and it should be available later this month.

Full specs and PR after the jump.
