Recently several G Watch owners complained about the charging pins on their new G Watch corroding. After taking to social media and sharing photos of the damage, LG responded with the following.
LG TV, Monitors, AV and IT Support
Recently it has come to our attention that a small number of G Watch devices have been reported to have developed discoloration and residue buildup on the terminal pins located on the back. While completely safe and unlikely to affect charging, LG will be rolling out a maintenance release over the next few days that will disable the current when the G Watch is not in the charging dock. The maintenance release will be rolled out automatically over-the-air to all G Watch owners. We thank G Watch users for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.
Apparently the issue results from running electrical current through the pins while it comes into contact with skin and sweat. LG’s fix is to disable the current flowing to the pins whenever the watch is not charging. It’s still possible however that small amounts of corrosion and build up might happen if there is sweat remaining on the watch when it’s connected to a charging cradle. Cleaning the watch occasionally should reduce the likelihood of severe corrosion happening.
The OTA should be available now, and even if you aren’t experiencing this corrosion, it’s highly advisable that you run the update.
