#SGGQA 108: Apple and Amazon, Ninja and Mixer, Cloudflare and 8Chan

The FTC is having a busy week! Investigating Apple, Amazon, Google, and YouTube. Smart speaker spying, insider deals on storefronts, and video algorithms, there’s a LOT to talk about. Plus  US AG William Barr is the latest to try and force backdoors into encryption. The ESA leaked thousands of journalist details from E3. Ninja moved to Mixer.

And how should we handle speech, private companies, and hateful rhetoric in light of 8Chan and Cloudflare?

Let’s get our tech week started off right!

#SGGQA 107: Creator Chat – Production, PR, and Movies with Enobong Etteh from BooredAtWork

I’ve said it before, and I’ll likely say it again, but change is in the air. Friends and colleagues in the world of online content creation, we all seem to be looking at where we each fit. Some are focusing on an individual platform, while others, like my guest for this podcast, are spreading the wealth, and finding audiences around the web.

It shouldn’t come as any major surprise that one of the main reasons I like hosting these interviews, getting to spend more time chatting with my friends. For online producers, the people we meet on social media quickly become our work pals and colleagues.

I worked with Enobong Etteh from Booredatwork, for months online before we got to meet at a trade show, and we continued collaborating for years after on podcasts and gadget reviews. We regularly ramble on about technology, pr relationships, and always manage to get side tracked by our fandom for film and TV.  Enobong took some time to chat about his experiences working online, and where he might consider taking his channel next.

That’s enough from me, let’s jump into a little love fest with my best online buddy.

How can we stop this annoying YouTube “DRAMA DANCE”?

We’re wrapping up the summer. We’re near the end of “The Tech Doldrums”. Instead of circling back for long term reviews, or spending time with gadgets which might not have gotten as much attention, the popularity algorithm demands we feed it popular topics.

We don’t have any news on iPhone 11 or Note 10 or Pixel 4, but if you spend any time covering less popular brands, your channel metrics will take a hit. If your viewership falters slightly, Google stops recommending your channel. It’s a direct punishment metric designed to discourage you from straying. Even when you see a video these days about a Sony or an LG, it’s rarely a true review. It’s more likely what you’ll watch is a thinly veiled comparison against a more popular device.

“In reviewing the Sony, I’ve come to the conclusion that you should buy a Samsung instead.”

But I digress…

When we’ve run out of actual news and review topics, but we still need to feed the popularity algorithm, what we arrive at is pretty obnoxious. I call it “The Drama Dance”. Continue reading “How can we stop this annoying YouTube “DRAMA DANCE”?”
