AT&T Finally Delivers “Denim” Update for the Lumia 1520

With all the noise around the FCC yesterday, you might have missed a long awaited update start pushing out to the king Lumia on AT&T.

Verizon surprised us all in being first to deliver the Lumia Denim firmware update to the Icon, but now it’s Big Blue’s turn to update the monster phablet Lumia 1520.

Windows Phone fans will be happy to play with a new camera app capable of shooting HDR photos and 4K video. Also on board is a new voice activation trigger for the Digital Assistant search app. Saying “Hey Cortana” by your phone will initiate a voice search or command even when your phone’s screen is off.

This update will also replace any AT&T pre-installed software on the phone. If you uninstalled AT&T Navigator or FamilyMap in the past, they’ll return. Thankfully, unlike bloat on Android devices, these apps can still be uninstalled without rooting or jumping through hoops.

It took us a while to get here, but Denim brings a collection of bug fixes and new features to play with, while we wait for Microsoft to deliver Windows 10.

To see if your Lumia has received the update, head to “Settings”, then to “Phone Update”. You can see our 4K video review from the Icon below (and the 1520’s camera performs very similarly).

Blackberry Passport and Classic coming to AT&T February 20th

blackberry_passport_left_943x432Blackberry might not be as popular as they once were, but I’m still glad to see the Canadian company producing alternatives to the current crop of rectangular “slabs of glass” design that pretty much every other phone manufacturer has agreed on.

While it’s a bit more niche, for those of us who still enjoy a hardware keyboard, the Passport and Classic BB smartphones will be available on AT&T starting February 20th. The higher end Passport will drop for $199 on two year agreement, and the Classic will go for $49.99 on contract.

AT&T to Match Google Fiber Speeds and Pricing in Kansas City

ATT logoI’ve said it before. I’ll say it again.

The fastest way to improve an industry’s service or pricing is to introduce more competition. For the broadband industry, we’ve been watching traditional cable and DSL providers scramble to improve their offerings in areas where Google or publicly funded efforts are rolling out fiber to home internet.

AT&T has announced plans to match Google’s price and performance in areas around Kansas City. Gigabit broadband will cost $70, and combined with a basic TV package will increase that rate to $120.

It’s interesting to note that AT&T will also be courting businesses as Google currently only offers their fiber solution to residential areas. AT&T is already operating their “Gigapower” version of U-Verse in Austin, and there has been talk of expanding to more areas around the country this year. Moving to Kansas City is a clear shot at the area Google started their fiber roll out.

With Google announcing more cities on their list for gigabit internet, it would seem the broadband market might be heating up a bit, especially as cable providers like Time Warner and Comcast seem ill-equipped to offer competitive speeds and pricing compared to fiber providers.

You can read AT&T’s full press release below.

AT&T World Connect Delivers Unlimited Calling to Mexico

ATT logoFollowing their acquisition of Mexican carrier Iusacell, AT&T is updating their World Connect international calling package.

World Connect still costs an additional $5 per month per line, and calls to Canada are still 1¢ per minute, but now all of your calls to Mexico will no longer have additional minute charges.

This update includes calls to landlines or cell phones, so if you’re making a lot of calls down south (Mexico is the most called country from the United States), this could be a handy way to save a little cash on your international communications.

AT&T to Kick It Old School with Blackberry Classic

blackberry_classic_946x432Sometimes you just need a good, old-fashioned, nostalgic, throwback. This seems to hold true for cars and football jerseys, and Blackberry is hoping it’ll spark some interest in their phones.

AT&T announced it’ll carry the BB Classic, which pairs their spiffy new BBOS 10 with the classic stylings of older BB handsets. Were you missing that old tic-tac keyboard experience? The Classic should be available early next year on Big Blue, and you can catch the full press release below.
