Cupertino Will Be First City In California to Get Gigabit AT&T U-Verse

Fiber roll outs are starting to spread!

AT&T is announcing plans to introduce their “Gigapower” U-Verse service to more areas. The first city in California to receive full duplex gigabit broadband?

Cupertino!

Yes Apple’s home town will be getting data speeds 10 times faster than the beefiest cable offerings around these parts. Specific locations and dates will be announced soon, and San Jose, CA is also in consideration for a future fiber roll out.

Any company want to light up Los Angeles? Any one?  Full AT&T PR below.

AT&T Confirms They Will Carry The “HTC One M8 For Windows”

Apparently Verizon’s claims of exclusivity weren’t entirely accurate, as we’ve just received a press release from Big Blue that they too will be carrying the Windows Phone flavored HTC M8.

The HTC “W8” will join the most complete collection of Windows Phones offered up by any USA carrier, and should give some of those Nokias a run for their money.

htc one w8 adWhile I’m really looking forward to see how HTC customizes the WP8.1 experience, I still think the name of this phone is tragically confusing. As I said in my VZW write up, “M8 FOR Windows” makes it sound like some kind of accessory for a Windows PC. I was really hoping to see a sleek sophisticated ad where the “M” in the M8 title flips upside down to become a “W”. Sigh… But I digress…

AT&T Gigabit U-Verse Now Live in Dallas, Texas – Coming Soon to Surrounding Cities

DFW_localIt’s slow going, but more cities and communities are starting to receive faster fiber based broadband. AT&T announced improvements to the areas around Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas.

Gigabit data is now available to residents and businesses in Highland Park and University Park. The rest of the area will have access to 100Mbps data rates, but those residents and businesses should have access to gigabit by the end of 2014.

Pricing for gigabit data starts at $120 month, and AT&T expects to spread this service throughout North Texas over the next several years, as part of a larger initiative which should see improved broadband service to several other large cities throughout the South East.

LG Announces “G Vista” Phablet for AT&T

lg g vista mini viewAhead of Samsung’s Note 4 release, LG is keeping the pressure on by announcing another large screened device.

The G Vista looks like it might be aiming for more of a mid-range market. A 5.7″ 720p screen will be paired with a Qualcomm quad-core (specific model not announced) and 1.5GB of RAM. The G3’s excellent Laser Focus returns, but only with an 8MP sensor, and there’s no word on whether it will have optical image stabilization. A 3,200 mAh battery should provide excellent battery life with these modest specs, and we’ll see the whole LG suite of Dual-Window, Mini-Apps, and KnockOn codes. There’s also a new Mini-View, which can shrink the on-screen view for easier one-hand navigation.

The G Vista will be available from Big Blue starting August 22nd for $49.99 on two year contract or for $354.99 if you want to buy it outright. Full PR below.

Timex Unveils IRONMAN ONE GPS+ Smartwatch

Timex took the wraps off of their new fitness focused smartwatch.

TW5K88800Built on a partnership with AT&T and Qualcomm, the ONE GPS+ uses the incredible screen from the Toq for low battery usage and direct sunlight view-ability.

In addition to the Mirasol display, the watch also comes with 4GB of storage and Bluetooth for music playback, GPS for location and fitness tracking, and a 3G phone connection for messaging and a pretty neat SOS feature.

For many people, exercising with a phone is becoming a necessity as that’s where all your entertainment and communications capabilities are stored. The idea that you could leave with just a watch, not worry about sweat-soaking your phone, and still have the basics covered is pretty exciting.

The ONE GPS+ is currently in pre-sale on the Timex site for $400 or $450 with a built in heart rate monitor.

Official Windows Phone 8.1 Update Available for AT&T Lumia 925 and 520

NUSA-PP-Lumia-925-Hero-att-tmo-04-jpgWe’ve been covering the roll out for Windows Phone 8.1 since the early developer preview days. It’s already been made available for the Lumia 1520, and now it’ll be rolling out for the Lumia 925 and entry level wonder the 520.

For those who have been using the Developer Preview, you’ll likely need to wipe out your phone, reset to WP8, and then re-install the WP8.1 update to get all of the Nokia Cyan goodness. It’s a fairly easy rollback using the Nokia Software Recovery Tool. The process took me about two hours on my Lumia 1520, so make sure you back up your info before you start.

You can see our full review of Windows Phone 8.1 below!
