Can a Five Year Old Phone Compete Today? How Far has Android Come Since the LG V50?

It’s the time of year we can look back and reflect. We’re starting to get a look at 2024 devices. How far has Android come over the last five years? Revisiting the LG V50, let’s see how well it can hang against modern powerhouse phones.

Will it be completely outclassed? Over course it will!

Enthusiasts want more performance, but will an old premium phone lose SO bad that consumers would want to upgrade their phone? This conversation is more complicated than a GeekBench score… Continue reading “Can a Five Year Old Phone Compete Today? How Far has Android Come Since the LG V50?”

WHOA! The Qualcomm DESTROYS the Apple M3 in a BLOODY Fight of BRUTALITY! SMASHED! WRECKED! BOOM!!! 🔥🔥🔥

I hate synthetic benchmarks and hype-beast clickbait.

You really get a sense that the tech hobbyist scene is dying generation-ally. The commentary on products is niche-ing down to cater to a smaller and smaller group of “tech dudes”.

More people than ever are USING tech, but fewer really seem entertained BY the tech. I digress.

I’ve read through three different hot takes now about Qualcomm’s new X Elite chip, comparing a couple of Geekbench scores against other chips from AMD, Intel, and Apple. They look at a couple number scores, and then draw a conclusion before any of these components have actually shipped in products to consumers. It’s kinda the worst flavor of arm chair tech reviewing.

(Get it? ARM chair? It’s a silicon pun.) Continue reading “WHOA! The Qualcomm DESTROYS the Apple M3 in a BLOODY Fight of BRUTALITY! SMASHED! WRECKED! BOOM!!! 🔥🔥🔥”

OnePlus 11 Video Round Up! Introduction, Comparisons, Performance Testing!

We’ve got a LOT to talk about!

The OnePlus embargo has lifted, and I believe this is one of the best “performance per dollar” phones available in North America. I shot a round up of smaller videos to chat about the 11, and also compare it against some other top tier devices.

Let’s GO!

Summer 2022 Snapdragon 8 Gen1 Performance Round Up!

We’re more than halfway through 2022, and it’s time to take a look at premium phone performance!

The Snapdragon 8 Gen1 has been a controversial chip for expensive Android phones. Qualcomm used ARM reference designs to build a powerful System on Chip. Samsung was responsible for producing the chip on Qualcomm’s designs. Then, manufacturers build phones around those power and thermal specifications.

That thermal conversation has been a challenge to track this year. The Snapdragon 8 Gen1 is a powerful chip, but it’s a finnicky performer if thermals and battery life aren’t handled appropriately.

This SOC arrived at the same time as some significant changes to Android. The way Android 12 handles storage reduces performance for numerous apps and services. Years of my benchmarking results on older phones are no longer directly comparable to current phones with Android 12 and newer.

Phones released in the first half of 2022 are a unique group of devices.

More powerful (but hotter) CPU and GPU, balanced against performance sapping software.

The refreshed Snapdragon 8+ Gen1 is starting to ship in new phones for the second half of the year. ARM is improving the power efficiency, Qualcomm is refining the design, and TSMC is replacing Samsung for the chip fabrication.

It’s a good time to chart how these devices currently compare against each other.

We’ll see where these companies are improving later in the year. We’ll get to see if the 8+ Gen1 runs cooler. We’ll get to see if app developers are taking better advantage of this SOC performance.

Let’s look at some benchmark scores! Continue reading “Summer 2022 Snapdragon 8 Gen1 Performance Round Up!”

Android 12 Broke ALL My Benchmarks: Scoped Storage Rant

This is a little ugly. For those who want a TLDR, the video above should help explain.

I’m trying to run some newer phones through my slate of tests to grade performance. The results don’t compare favorably to similar tier phones I’ve tested in the past.

Everything has gotten more complicated to test AND scores are lower. I think I’ve found the main culprit.

Scoped Storage.

Android used to have a fairly open file system. It was blissfully easy to access most files on your phone. It was a huge power user advantage over iOS. Continue reading “Android 12 Broke ALL My Benchmarks: Scoped Storage Rant”

Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 9000, and the Problems with POWER

I’m always going to be excited by better competition.

In 2019, the mobile landscape was dominated by Qualcomm and Apple SOCs at the premium tier of phones and tablets. HiSilicon’s Kirin was facing issues due to political pressures placed on Huawei. MediaTek maintained a respectable reputation as a mid-range and entry-level chip provider.

We didn’t have much choice in what powered more expensive gadgets.

Flash forward two years, we’re starting to get some insight on what will power devices in 2022, and this market is a LOT more exciting.

MediaTek took the wraps off a premium tier competitor. We’re about to hear more from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon team. Apple’s A15 is solidly refined over the A14. Google launched their first custom chip with the Pixel 6.

A stale landscape has exploded, and more companies are rumored to be designing their own solutions over the next several years.

When it comes to pocketable portable performance, we just have one small issue…

Power. Continue reading “Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 9000, and the Problems with POWER”

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 By The Benchmarks: Getting More Done FASTER!

This thing is NO JOKE.

There’s a bit of a gap in AndroidLand.

Android TABLETS are often positioned as inexpensive media consumption devices. If you want a powerful slate, the market points you to either a GalaxyTab, or some other option like a Windows/ChomeOS/iPad.

Handling a Duo 2, it’s refreshing to use a multi-tasking slate, that is also a current-gen powerhouse computer.  While it can be a bit clumsy at times as a phone, there’s a satisfying idea of “doing more” while on the go. This is where we get to see how this radically thin folding slab stacks up to the competition.

Here’s the Surface Duo 2 by the benchmarks! Continue reading “Microsoft Surface Duo 2 By The Benchmarks: Getting More Done FASTER!”

Pixel 6 Pro Creator Benchmarks: Tensor Performance Part 2

How powerful is the Pixel 6 Pro?

How fast is Tensor? We can finally dig into some numbers! Taking a look at some benchmarks and tests, we can give this new SOC its first comparison against some other premium phones of this year. We’re JUST starting the conversation on this phone, but even in these early days, competition is fun.

Let’s dig in! Continue reading “Pixel 6 Pro Creator Benchmarks: Tensor Performance Part 2”
