The Pixel 5 got its April update! A 16MB OTA, which would usually mean just some basic security patches. Interesting though, that this update seems to bring some tweaks that improve GPU performance. Beyond just a Geekbench score, what might this mean for real world gaming? Let’s take a look! Continue reading “Pixel 5 April Update: Did we REALLY get MORE POWER?”
Use Face Unlock With a Mask on ANY Phone!
Apple is adding an option to help people unlock their phones while wearing masks. We’ve had features like that on Android for YEARS now. Here’s a quick reminder, how to use Smart Lock on your Android phone! Continue reading “Use Face Unlock With a Mask on ANY Phone!”
Pixel 5 Camera: Has Google FAILED to keep up?
Tech reviewers are breaking in new phones from Samsung and Apple, both companies using larger sensors for their respective cameras. It’s interesting to see a general commentary from large tech outlets, where they assert the Pixel 5’s camera is “too old” to compare against these new phones.
Is that really how phone cameras work? Does a slightly larger camera sensor REALLY make such a significant difference in photo performance? Why aren’t these tech “journalists” showing their work?
I think we need to do a little shooting… Continue reading “Pixel 5 Camera: Has Google FAILED to keep up?”
Chromecast with Google TV: The cure for dumb smart TV’s
I have a nice Samsung QLED TV. I was really excited to buy it. After using it for a couple years, I hate the smart features on this TV.
Let me backtrack for a second.
I want control.
Camera, computer, or TV, I want to control how I operate that item. I want to know what media I can use with it. I want to know what features will interact with my other networked hardware.
There can be NO gatekeepers between me, the hardware I use, and the media I pay for. Continue reading “Chromecast with Google TV: The cure for dumb smart TV’s”
Google Pixel 5 Review: For folks who LIKE little phones!
My review of the Pixel 5 hinges on one major decision. Do you like smaller phones?
There aren’t many good options for a smaller “one thumb” mighty mouse running Android, especially phones including a 5G radio. Using the Pixel 5 for a couple weeks, let’s chat some of my pros and cons of this punchy little option.
What Google is doing here is interesting, but is it the right fit for you? Continue reading “Google Pixel 5 Review: For folks who LIKE little phones!”
What’s in a name? The Pixel 5 is NOT an upgrade over the Pixel 4?
A gadget’s name is important. Branding takes time to establish, and it serves as a shortcut for consumers. A potential customer doesn’t need to analyze every aspect of the gadget. If they liked SmartyPhone5, when it’s time to upgrade, they’ll probably like SmartyPhone7.
When a company changes their naming, or pivots from that strategy, it can cause confusion. Confusion in this market is often bad for sales. We should always be concerned about how a company presents a product.
At the same time, tech enthusiasts should also be a bit savvier than the “average consumers” we’re all so interested in protecting. Continue reading “What’s in a name? The Pixel 5 is NOT an upgrade over the Pixel 4?”
Google Pixel 5: Who is this phone for? Is it a flagship?
Google claims the Pixel 5 is the “ultimate 5G Google Phone”, but what exactly is it?
This is the top of the line offering from Google, but is it a true “flagship” product? Is it a price disrupting phone? Is it the Google iPhone?
It’s an interesting year for the Pixel, so let’s dig in a bit.
Just who is this thing for? Continue reading “Google Pixel 5: Who is this phone for? Is it a flagship?”
