New Moto G with 5″ Display set for $179 Off Contract Price

moto g teaser vidAlongside the Moto X refresh, the Moto G is also getting an update.

Keeping a similar shell, and the front facing speakers from the X, the new G will step up to a 5″ 720p screen paired with a low power 1.2GHz quad-core and 1GB of RAM. Depending on region it will receive 8 or 16GB of storage with a MicroSD slot to add more. A 2070 mAh battery should keep the device running all day thanks to the low power internals.

While the G wont have the same breadth of customization options through Moto Maker that the X will have, there will be a variety of backplates for consumers to choose in a variety of colors. Happily, for people shopping entry level devices, Moto stands with LG and Nokia in providing inexpensive phones which look very similar to their flagship counterparts. That simply because they aren’t spending as much, doesn’t mean they should get saddled with boring or “cheap” looking phones.

The new Moto G is available starting today off contract for $179.99 at Motorola.com. You can see Moto’s teaser for the new G below.

OtterBox Unveils “Alpha Glass” Screen Protectors for iPhone 5 and Galaxy S5

otterbox alpha glass screen protectorA premier smartphone is a hefty investment, and most accidental damage tends to take out the beautiful screens on our devices.

OtterBox, known for rugged cases, is now getting into the screen protector game. They aren’t just throwing out any floppy plastic guards though, they going with hardened glass.

Dubbed “Alpha Glass”, it features “Anti-Shatter” technology, and they think it’s tough enough to withstand your daily shenanigans. In its debut, you’ll find versions cut for the iPhone 5C, 5S, and the Galaxy S5, with more phone models to follow. $30 is the price of entry, and smashing that would be a lot better than a screen replacement.

Lenovo Sees Growth in Smartphones and Tablets, Leads PC Sales for Fifth Consecutive Quarter

lenovo-logo-1Everything’s coming up Lenovo!

The company announced their first quarter results for 2014, and the numbers are looking pretty rosy. Tablet sales are up 67% over last year, smartphones were up 39%, and Lenovo became the number one smartphone manufacturer in China.

PC shipments were up 15%, though it’s unclear what Lenovo is classifying as a PC and what they’re badging a tablet these days, as the company has led the charge on blurring the line between Windows 8 laptops and tablets. This is the fifth consecutive quarter Lenovo has led the market in PC sales, but for the first time in company history, they sold more phones than computers.

At a time where other established companies are struggling, Lenovo also saw a 13% gross profit increase over this time last year. Moving into next quarter, Lenovo believes they’ll continue to improve those numbers with their acquisitions of Motorola and IBM x86.
