Budget hardware is brutally competitive these days. The daily driver experience found near $400 is formidable, and we’re getting more options for different features. Adding 5G to the mix, these are the phones that will help move 5G forward in the Android space. More reasonably priced, but not compromising too much from the upper mid-range tier.
OnePlus has represented the idea of low price and high performance since the brand started. 2020 was a strong year for TCL coming out of the shadows with their own label on phones.

TCL 10 5G UW first impressions!
This year, 5G started out as a wallet busting tech. Closing out 2020, we’re finding more options for 5G at more reasonable prices. TCL is a really interesting brand to follow, and their new phone is the least expensive option currently on Verizon for a decently powerful mid-ranger with 5G support.

We can’t put EVERYTHING into one phone. We need to choose features, and balance that against a target price. As we near the entry level tier of handsets, there’s also a little less room for price fluctuations. Devices with smaller margins won’t find the same dramatic sales, or the same bargain used prices, as more premium handsets.
Right now, mid-rangers are enjoying some time in the spotlight. Pricing from Nord to Velvet, and several phones in between, but that doesn’t mean we should ignore the competition of even less expensive devices. We should expect more compromises, but as long as we keep expectations properly informed, someone shopping a modest budget should still be satisfied.
