RODE Vlogger Kit Review: Shoot Better Video!

Great film-making tools at a surprisingly decent price!

Phones are incredible pocket computers, and they often include respectable cameras. Calling something a “vlogger kit” might give someone the impression that this is a low quality accessory for low effort video streaming.

That’s not the case here.

RODE delivers a fantastic starter platform for folks looking to get more out of a phone camera, and with accessories that should work with other pro gear.

CES 2019 ReCap: Vlogging for a Week on the LG V40

Second year in a row producing videos at CES all from my phone! The main goal over last year was to streamline my setup. What worked? What still had issues? Can you really depend on JUST a phone to get work done? Here’s my recap from this year’s CES!

Making a whole video on the LG V40: What did we learn?

When I shot a comparison between the LG V40 and the V30, I wanted to see how much of that video I could produce from a phone. In part, because I was stuck waiting for my iPhone camera review to finish rendering. Under that kind of time crunch, I was happy that I was able to almost completely finish off that review. Of course, there were some issues. Some not so small issues. What did we learn about mobile video production? Continue reading “Making a whole video on the LG V40: What did we learn?”

YouTube’s New Rules: Help me build a Reddit for smaller tech reviewers?

YouTube changed the requirements for monetizing a new channel, and the numbers don’t look great for new content creators. With many producers complaining about videos being demonetized, what can we do to help support smaller content creators? I’m trying to build a small “feeder” community to discover new producers.

I hope you’ll help me support new and smaller producers by sharing, linking, and upvoting over at r/GlowingRectangles.

Microsoft’s Hyperlapse Might Come to Windows Phone

microsoft research hyperlapseWe reported on Microsoft’s Hyperlapse project last August. While Instagram might have an iPhone app which provides for simplified timelapse tools, Microsoft’s solution is a sophisticated 3D rendering program which radically smooths out videos shot from 1st person perspective cameras like a GoPro or Google Glass. It’s incredible output, and I would highly recommend checking out the project video below.

It’s now being reported by Microsoft Insider, that there’s an internal BETA for a phone version of Hyperlapse, and that the app was updated as recently as March 25th. This could be a fantastically fun feature to bring to Windows Phones, and would be yet another class leading photo/video feature to land on Lumia devices.

Of course, we’ll need to wait and see if this is brought to market soon, with Windows 10, or ever.

UPDATED! SomeGadgetGuy’s Production Master Class for Social Media Week LA 2013

BVHHsnNCUAAcIrfIt’s a good thing I don’t  ramble or anything…

I was invited to teach a master class on media production for Social Media Week in Los Angeles. I was honored to be asked, and thankfully they had me tackling a subject I could jump into, producing higher quality materials using the tools which come standard on just about all of our various gadgets and phones and tablets.

It was a great environment, being able to let my geek flag fly, and share my experiences ABOUT sharing my experiences while discussing how to create a work flow, tackle pre-production, and take some of the stress out of the post process for photos, audio, and video.

We’re wrapping up SMW-LA tomorrow, but I’ve gotten to meet some really cool folks and sit in on some fantastic workshops. For more info on Social Media Week events around the world, check out: http://socialmediaweek.org/

***UPDATE***

My somewhat rambling master class is now on LiveStream for you all to marvel at my presenting skills!
