Juan has been obsessed with consumer electronics since before computers had GUI’s. Out of college he worked on a JIT computing contract which supported DOE facilities in New Mexico. He’s been featured on numerous podcasts and radio shows lending his tech insights. You can also find him in LA directing voice over actors and producing spoken word recording.
HMD has delivered something fun, something unique, but aside from a crazy camera experiment, we also need to see how it behaves as a phone. This is shaping up to be a longer conversation than I was expecting, and it all hinges on the next update Nokia pushes out to the 9.
Doesn’t mean we can’t talk about general phone performance, some bugs I hope are addressed, and how this phone compares to a more refined option already on the market. Let’s take a look!
Revenge of the mid-range phones! In 2019 we’ll see premium flagships with 5G launch at $1500. We’ll see folding phones OVER $2000! What you can get for roughly HALF the price of an iPhone XS is pretty remarkable. This is the best year for mid-range competition since 2016, so let’s take a look at what you can get now for a LOT less! Incredible how much phone you can buy for LESS than the launch price of a Galaxy S4…
Even though they look ridiculous, and will make you go deaf sooner, it’s pretty likely that the AirPods2 will be one of the most popular wireless headphone solutions of the year. If that’s the case, we can at least share tips and tricks on how to use these earbuds (and Apple’s wired EarPods, and Google’s lame PixelBuds) as safely as possible. I made a video on setting volume limits in iOS, to show where those volume and normalizing settings live on your iPhone.
Remember, once you damage your ears, they never really fully heal or recover. Even if your hearing is already damaged, it can always get worse. And, while BT headsets are relatively cheap and convenient, hearing aids often cost around $5000 a pair, and usually aren’t covered by insurance.
Splitting up my commentary on the View 20, having a little more fun covering specific features. One of the most difficult questions to answer about a phone, is it good enough to warrant a one-year upgrade? Compared against its predecessor, how much better is the View 20? What new kit did we get? What did we lose? Where is there still room to improve? Let’s take a trek through the mid-range! Continue reading “Honor View 20 vs View 10: The best one-year upgrade?”
It tracks your activity. It tracks your heart rate. It tracks your location. It tracks for up to TWO WEEKS on a charge. And, it looks REAL GOOD doing it! The Huawei Watch GT looks great, but will it scratch that smartwatch itch? Let’s take it for a spin! Continue reading “Huawei Watch GT: The prettiest fitness tracker!”
Apple quietly launches new iPads! I kinda like the look of the triple camera iPhone leaks. Democrats push harder on Net Neutrality! Android Q is locking down hardware and might make custom ROMs impossible! Mozilla launches a new file sharing service.
And what happens when a social network dies? Archive.org is rushing to back up Google+ while MySpace admits failure in losing a TON of music uploads.
Wading in to some expanded coverage on the Nokia 9. Lot’s of people asking about comparisons, RAW vs RAW, low light vs Night Sight. There’s a lot happening here, so we can have a conversation about what this phone is doing, and show off a few samples, but it’s REALLY not ready for a full review…
Version 1.2.3 includes a passage on Night Mode photography, updates the section on multi-camera phones, includes a new exercise, and corrects numerous spelling and grammar problems.
If you have a copy, update it in the Kindle app, and please drop me a review on Amazon if you like it!
