Bokeh is NOT Pronounced “Boca”! Limited run T-Shirts and Hoodies for April!

It’s a joke for April, but NOT an April Fools joke!

There’s much debate over how to pronounce the word “bokeh”, a Japanese term used to describe the artistic quality of lens blur. While we photo-geeks squabble about “ke” versus “kay”, or what region of Japan has a slight upward inflection, or blah blah blah…

The one thing we should all be able to agree on is that the recent Apple commercial is completely wrong. Where one woman turns to another and says:

“Did you just BOCA my child?”

Boca. As in Boca Raton. That’s completely wrong. All I can hear is one woman ask another:

“Did you just MOUTH my child?”

Which is kind of dirty for an Apple ad.

I’ve drawn a line in the sand, and if you want to stand with me on the correct side of that line, I’ve put up a collection of t-shirts and hoodies to help you support the good and righteous cause of language preservation. We’ll probably lose this fight against the juggernaut of Apple marketing, but we won’t go down without a fight!

Men and Women cut premium t-shirts, and super soft premium hoodies, only available through the month of April!

Adonit PhotoGrip Qi – Better Photos, More Power!

I LOVED the original PhotoGrip, and I’m always excited to see a product evolve. The PhotoGrip Qi removes one feature from the original PhotoGrip, and adds a new feature to extend your phone’s battery life out in the field. I’ve been using it for a couple weeks, here are my thoughts!

BenQ Screenbar Lite Review: Office Lamp for Your Laptop!

BenQ Screenbar Lite review! Get it? LITE? It’s smaller AND it’s a lamp? Get it? I know office equipment isn’t the sexiest kit to review, but I have a lot of fun with office tech. We spend so much time working, at desks, looking at monitors. We should look at how to do that healthier. A good office lamp will help reduce eyestrain, and this option from BenQ is pretty nice…

What do we really get from “more powerful” smartphone processors?

When a new phone is announced, manufacturers often point to improvements like new processors and GPUs as things consumers desire. We want more powerful gadgets, but what does that really mean? What do we actually get with these generational improvements?

More gratifying benchmark scores don’t correlate with performance improvements for your favorite services.

Nokia 9 PureView Two Weeks Later: NOT the final word…

Well, it’s LIKE a review!

HMD has delivered something fun, something unique, but aside from a crazy camera experiment, we also need to see how it behaves as a phone. This is shaping up to be a longer conversation than I was expecting, and it all hinges on the next update Nokia pushes out to the 9.

Doesn’t mean we can’t talk about general phone performance, some bugs I hope are addressed, and how this phone compares to a more refined option already on the market. Let’s take a look!

Revenge of the Mid-Range Smartphones: Best lineup since 2016!

Revenge of the mid-range phones! In 2019 we’ll see premium flagships with 5G launch at $1500. We’ll see folding phones OVER $2000! What you can get for roughly HALF the price of an iPhone XS is pretty remarkable. This is the best year for mid-range competition since 2016, so let’s take a look at what you can get now for a LOT less! Incredible how much phone you can buy for LESS than the launch price of a Galaxy S4…

AirPods 2: Better tech, but still going to wreck your hearing…

Better Siri support! Better audio quality! An optional wireless charging case for $40!

But, I’m sad to see the same “open ear” design, which does nothing to block or reduce surrounding noise.

As rates of hearing loss continue to rise in all age demographics (but fastest in kids in young adults), it’s always worth pushing back against a fashion trend, and sharing good data with people you care about.

Even though they look ridiculous, and will make you go deaf sooner, it’s pretty likely that the AirPods2 will be one of the most popular wireless headphone solutions of the year. If that’s the case, we can at least share tips and tricks on how to use these earbuds (and Apple’s wired EarPods, and Google’s lame PixelBuds) as safely as possible. I made a video on setting volume limits in iOS, to show where those volume and normalizing settings live on your iPhone.

And for more information on hearing loss, please check out my interview with Dr. Alison Grimes, head of Audiology at UCLA.

Remember, once you damage your ears, they never really fully heal or recover. Even if your hearing is already damaged, it can always get worse. And, while BT headsets are relatively cheap and convenient, hearing aids often cost around $5000 a pair, and usually aren’t covered by insurance.

Listen healthier. Listen happier.
