Google Pixel 5 Review: For folks who LIKE little phones!

My review of the Pixel 5 hinges on one major decision. Do you like smaller phones?

There aren’t many good options for a smaller “one thumb” mighty mouse running Android, especially phones including a 5G radio. Using the Pixel 5 for a couple weeks, let’s chat some of my pros and cons of this punchy little option.

What Google is doing here is interesting, but is it the right fit for you? Continue reading “Google Pixel 5 Review: For folks who LIKE little phones!”

#SGGQA 179: OnePlus Nord N10, Samsung Beats Apple, FTC to Sue Facebook, Trump Loses (Twitter Protections)

President Trump is about to lose something he really wants, and that would be his special protections on Twitter. The FTC is likely to sue Facebook this month over antitrust violations. A TON of older Android phones are about to have a harder time browsing the internet. A factory fire at AKM is making audio gear significantly more expensive. Samsung just beat Apple in sales in the USA.

And the OnePlus Nord N10 is here!

Let’s get our tech week started right!

OnePlus Nord N10: Not for me, and that’s ok!

The evolution of OnePlus is complete.

Once a darling enthusiast brand, not this label has grown up into a mainstream consumer option. Releasing several phones this year at different price points, the Nord N10 is not a phone built for me. That makes it kind of an exciting option this year… Continue reading “OnePlus Nord N10: Not for me, and that’s ok!”

What’s in a name? The Pixel 5 is NOT an upgrade over the Pixel 4?

A gadget’s name is important. Branding takes time to establish, and it serves as a shortcut for consumers. A potential customer doesn’t need to analyze every aspect of the gadget. If they liked SmartyPhone5, when it’s time to upgrade, they’ll probably like SmartyPhone7.

When a company changes their naming, or pivots from that strategy, it can cause confusion. Confusion in this market is often bad for sales. We should always be concerned about how a company presents a product.

At the same time, tech enthusiasts should also be a bit savvier than the “average consumers” we’re all so interested in protecting. Continue reading “What’s in a name? The Pixel 5 is NOT an upgrade over the Pixel 4?”

TCL 10 5G UW: The Most Wallet Friendly 5G Phone on Verizon!

TCL 10 5G UW first impressions!

This year, 5G started out as a wallet busting tech. Closing out 2020, we’re finding more options for 5G at more reasonable prices. TCL is a really interesting brand to follow, and their new phone is the least expensive option currently on Verizon for a decently powerful mid-ranger with 5G support.

Let’s take a look! Continue reading “TCL 10 5G UW: The Most Wallet Friendly 5G Phone on Verizon!”

Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: The case for SPECIALTY Hardware

This is an interesting position for me to be in. As an overall brand, I’m not the biggest fan of Samsung these days.

I feel they buy their market position more than they earn it. They pour advertising dollars into media to sway consumer behavior and manipulate search engine popularity algorithms. They set a toxic tone of mocking rivals in their ads, but quickly copy those same rivals when it benefits their profits. They were one of the higher profile phone manufacturers caught cheating benchmarks back in the day, and likely copied Apple’s update policy of slowing down older phones. As a corporation, they’ve abused their market position to inflate prices on components. Their PR has been the most punitive I’ve ever worked with (and failed to work with), over several media publications.

While I appreciate individual products, I don’t like Samsung as a company.

Which is why it feels funny writing a defense for one of their most expensive phones. I’m not the guy for this job, but I’ll try my best.

The Note 20 Ultra is a great phone at a very good price. Continue reading “Galaxy Note 20 Ultra: The case for SPECIALTY Hardware”
