Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 9000, and the Problems with POWER

I’m always going to be excited by better competition.

In 2019, the mobile landscape was dominated by Qualcomm and Apple SOCs at the premium tier of phones and tablets. HiSilicon’s Kirin was facing issues due to political pressures placed on Huawei. MediaTek maintained a respectable reputation as a mid-range and entry-level chip provider.

We didn’t have much choice in what powered more expensive gadgets.

Flash forward two years, we’re starting to get some insight on what will power devices in 2022, and this market is a LOT more exciting.

MediaTek took the wraps off a premium tier competitor. We’re about to hear more from Qualcomm’s Snapdragon team. Apple’s A15 is solidly refined over the A14. Google launched their first custom chip with the Pixel 6.

A stale landscape has exploded, and more companies are rumored to be designing their own solutions over the next several years.

When it comes to pocketable portable performance, we just have one small issue…

Power. Continue reading “Snapdragon 8 Gen 1, Dimensity 9000, and the Problems with POWER”

Poco M4 Pro 5G: Everything YOU need?

Poco M4 Pro Review!

Poco proudly flies the “flagship killer” banner, delivering phones that offer an incredible bang for buck. The new M4 Pro is in the GadgetLab, and taking it for a test drive, this is brutal competition. Standing out from the crowd is a challenge though.

Pixel 6 Pro Two Week Review: Just the beginning…

Pixel 6 Pro REVIEW!

This phone is an incredible fresh start for Google. New design. New OS. New UI. New Camera. New SOC. There’s no part of this phone which feels like a holdover from the last generation of Pixel phones.

That brings some teething pains, but the launch has been surprisingly smooth. We can absolutely discuss some pros and cons, but we should also hit ALL phones with the same early reviewer energy, right?

Allow me to play apologist for some early bugs, because I like where this might be going… Continue reading “Pixel 6 Pro Two Week Review: Just the beginning…”

Microsoft Surface Duo 2 By The Benchmarks: Getting More Done FASTER!

This thing is NO JOKE.

There’s a bit of a gap in AndroidLand.

Android TABLETS are often positioned as inexpensive media consumption devices. If you want a powerful slate, the market points you to either a GalaxyTab, or some other option like a Windows/ChomeOS/iPad.

Handling a Duo 2, it’s refreshing to use a multi-tasking slate, that is also a current-gen powerhouse computer.  While it can be a bit clumsy at times as a phone, there’s a satisfying idea of “doing more” while on the go. This is where we get to see how this radically thin folding slab stacks up to the competition.

Here’s the Surface Duo 2 by the benchmarks! Continue reading “Microsoft Surface Duo 2 By The Benchmarks: Getting More Done FASTER!”

Sony XPERIA Pro-I Camera: Why is this SO good?

While I wrap up shooting samples for a more in depth camera look at the Pro-I, and some upcoming comparisons, I wanted to take a couple minutes to chat about camera design. A camera is more complicated than just a shutter button on a screen.

Sony shows a LOT of thought can go into helping a user produce better content. Continue reading “Sony XPERIA Pro-I Camera: Why is this SO good?”

How big is a 1″ Camera Sensor? Why do we call it ‘One Inch’?

1″ sensors explained!

Phone cameras are getting bigger and bigger! When we talk about phone cameras, we describe the sensor size as a fraction of an inch. If you’ve ever tried to measure a camera sensor though, those measurements are often FAR smaller than one inch.

Why do we do this?

This needs a little explaining… Continue reading “How big is a 1″ Camera Sensor? Why do we call it ‘One Inch’?”

Sony XPERIA Pro-I: A REAL Pro Camera Phone!

XPERIA Pro I hands on!

This is NOT a review, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have a LOT of ground to cover. Sony is THE premium mobile brand for content creators and film makers. The XPERIA Pro I joins the mega-sensor camera club in a BIG way. When Sony says “Pro”, they REALLY mean PRO.

Let’s dig into this monster camera phone! Continue reading “Sony XPERIA Pro-I: A REAL Pro Camera Phone!”
